Team
Liberty Lose in O.T.
In
Thursday night's clash of the Melnick League Titans, Suomi, narrowly
escaped with a 3-2 overtime victory against the Boys in Blue. Team
Liberty
put up a valliant effort in defeat as they outshot their Finnish
opponents
36-25. Netminder Steve Faerge let in a pair of soft goals early
in the first
period and then turned away all the Finns could muster until his
defense
left him one on one with the opposing team's best player in the
overtime
stanza. Snuffy and yours truly were on the ice for the game winner.
The
Suomi speedster flew by both defenders like a hummingbird past a
pair of
tree sloths and beat Faerge with a slick move to net the gamewinner.
I've
seen glaciers move faster than the Liberty blue liners on that play.
On a
more positive note, Paul Gilmartin and defense partner Skippy Oliver
turned in a strong performance as both players were +2 on the evening.
Gilligan and the Skipper added to their rapidly growing legend with
a solid
3 period tour. Gillie showed flashes of brilliance on both ends
of the pond.
Our little buddy picked up a loose puck along the boards late in
the third
period and would not be denied the game tying goal. Early in the
last frame
Gilligan assisted "The Golden Jet" as Jimmy put the Blue
Men on the
scoreboard. Team Liberty showed a lot of heart by battling back
to tie the
game. David "Snuffelupagus" Theodosopoulos-- continued
to dazzle with
his puck carrying ability and all around offensive skills. Team
Liberty
shooters were stymied most of the evening by the mutant X-Men
goaltender of the Suomi squad. The netminder cousin of Magneto
apparently wore a chest protector that sucks up all pucks headed
his way.
Shot after shot left the sticks of Liberty attackers and banged
harmlessly
off the goalies magic gear. You have to give credit where due and
the
determined Finns covered up nicely in their own end all game long.
The Panorama City sniper was extremely active on the night with
his stun gun
as he felled several Liberty skaters including Snuffy and the normally
sure-footed Jimmy Golden.
